Maqam Ibrahim: A Captivating Sight To Behold

Pilgrims frequently become mesmerized by Maqam Ibrahim, Prophet Ibrahim’s footprints, as they perform Tawaf around Al Ka’aba.  

Makkah, the holiest city, holds numerous sites of great spiritual importance. Among them is the revered Maqam Ibrahim, a sacred symbol that carries a profound significance in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. Located near Al Ka’aba, this ancient stone bears witness to a remarkable story that dates back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim . The Black Stone and the Maqam, which date back 4,000 years, are the oldest and most revered sites in Islam.

Historical Significance 

The story of Maqam Ibrahim is intertwined with the narrative of Prophet Ibrahim . It was Ibrahim who, in obedience to Allah’s command, built the Kaaba with his son Ismail as a sacred sanctuary for worshiping Allah, the one and only God. During the construction, a miraculous event occurred, involving the stone that is modernly known as Maqam Ibrahim.  

The Miracle 

According to Islamic researchers and scholars, Ibrahim and Ismail were raising the walls of Al Ka’aba, and Prophet Ibrahim stood on a stone that miraculously softened, which is why his footprints are imprinted on it. There are several stories around the stone— used to stand on the stone to call people to Islam and Hajj after he built Al Ka’aba. Prophet footprints are still visible to this day. 

Maqam Ibrahim’s Journey 

The word “maqam” literally means station. Maqam Ibrahim serves as a reminder of the unwavering faith and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim and his son.  The Maqam has always been near Al Ka’aba, however, it was moved by Prophet Muhammad to facilitate Tawaf around Al Ka’aba. The  Nahshal floods struck Makkah and moved the stone during Omar Ibn Al-Khattab’s caliphate. The caliph then positioned the stone in its present location when he arrived in Makkah.  

The stone was formerly enclosed in a chamber to guard against theft and damage. However, the chamber was eventually taken out, and the stone was placed inside a glass case so that everyone could view it. 

Physical Characteristics 

Maqam Ibrahim is encased in a golden metal frame, displaying the footprints of the Prophet Ibrahim. The frame protects the stone and is adorned with intricate Arabic calligraphy and geometric patterns.  

The stone is 50 centimeters long on each side and has two oval pits that resemble footprints in the center. It is around 10 to 11 meters to the east of Al Ka’aba’s entrance. The footprints are said to be 22 centimeters in length and 14 centimeters in width. 

Spiritual Significance 

“….Take as your place of worship the place where Ibrahim(PBUH) stood (to pray).” 

– Surah Baqarah:125 

Maqam Ibrahim holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. It serves as a symbol of trust in Allah’s commands and the power of unwavering faith. The stone retains the blessings of Ibrahim and is a source of spiritual purification and guidance. 

Ibn Kathir narrated, “Proclaim (O Ebrahim) the Hajj to the people, calling them to come on pilgrimage to this House which We have commanded you to build.” 

To which the Prophet said, “O Lord, how can I proclaim it to the people when my voice does not reach them?” 

Allah then said, “Call and We will convey it.” So he stood at his Maqam (station) and said: “O people, your Lord has taken a House, so come to it on pilgrimage.”

Rituals and Observances 

After completing their Tawaf, Allah commands all the pilgrims to approach Maqam Ibrahim and offer two Rakat. It is preferred to recite Surat Al Kafirun and Surat Al Ikhlas in the second Raka’a. Maqam-e-Ibrahim is therefore a necessary component of the Umrah and Tawaf ritual.
