Situated at the heart of Al Masjid Al Haram in Makkah, the most sacred sanctuary in Islam, stands Al Ka’aba. While billions of Muslims worldwide offer their daily Salah facing the Holy Ka’aba, many from across the globe journey to the House of Allah SWT to perform Tawaf around Al Ka’aba.

Al Ka’aba serves as the spiritual focal point of Islam. It is Al Qibla and the center point for Hajj and Umrah, drawing believers together in a profound sense of unity and equality. It instills a feeling of harmony and uniformity, reminding us of our true purpose in life. Let us delve into the historical significance and captivating beauty of Al Ka’aba.

History and Significance

Al Ka’aba has a long and rich history dating back to pre-Islamic times. According to Islamic tradition, Al Ka’aba was originally built by Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail after Allah ordered Ibrahim to construct a sanctuary for worship. It is believed to be the first house of worship dedicated to Allah SWT.

Centuries later, Al Ka’aba became a center of pagan idol worship in pre-Islamic Arabia. When Prophet Muhammad conquered Makkah in 630 CE, he cleansed Al Ka’aba of idols and re-dedicated it to Allah. Since then, it has been our Qibla and a symbol of unity and monotheism.

The venerable Ka’aba has a history that spans over 5,000 years. Its foundation was established by Prophet Ibrahim . However, in the 6th century CE (608 CE), Quraysh reconstructed it to safeguard Al Ka’aba against potential floods in the future.

Al Ka’aba Structure

The term “Al Ka’aba” translates to “cube” in Arabic, and indeed, it is a magnificent square-shaped structure. Adorned with a black veil made of cotton and silk, known as Al Kiswah, the walls of the House of Allah SWT are embellished with golden inscriptions from the Holy Quran. This exquisite covering envelops the entirety of Al Ka’aba, adding to its splendor and sanctity.

Did you know that? Initially, the Holy Ka’aba encompassed an additional semi-circular space called Hijr Ismail. Due to its location in the low-lying valley of Farhan, Al Ka’aba would experience annual flooding.

In light of this, the leaders of Quraysh made the decision to reconstruct this revered structure a few years prior to the Prophet Muhammad receiving the first revelation.

The construction of the Holy Ka’aba relies on the utilization of granite, while the interior flooring of the Khana Ka’aba consists of marble and limestone.

It is approximately 50 feet (15 meters) high, with sides measuring about 60 feet (18 meters) in length. The four corners roughly face the four points of the compass.

The eastern corner holds the Black Stone (Al Ḥajar Al Aswad), which is the starting and ending point for Tawaf.

To safeguard the roof of the Kaaba, a rainwater pipe called Al Shadrawan was installed. Its purpose was to prevent the accumulation of rainwater and protect the foundation of the structure.

Al Kiswah is renewed annually in a special ceremony before the Hajj season. Beneath Al Kiswah, the walls of Al Ka’aba are clad in marble up to the height of the door frame while the upper portion is covered in a green cloth casing.

Did you know that there are actually two Holy Ka’abas?

The one we witness is situated in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, while the other one is positioned directly above it in the seventh sky and is referred to as ‘Al Bait Al Mamoor.’ And you can see Al Ka’aba from outer space.

The vicinity of the Holy Ka’aba is known to possess a strong magnetic force. This magnetic attraction is so potent that it prevents birds and planes from flying directly over Al Ka’aba. Consequently, despite Makkah’s prominence and importance, the city does not have an airport, precisely due to this magnetic influence.

Inside Al Ka’aba

Access to the interior hall of Al Ka’aba is generally prohibited, except for a few individuals like members of the Saudi royal family. Prayer inside the sacred monument is restricted to individuals authorized by Al-Shaibi family, the esteemed guardians of Al Ka’aba. Twice a year, a select group consisting of government officials, distinguished guests, and dignitaries are granted the privilege of offering prayers within the hallowed premises. The interior features bare walls and contains three pillars that hold up the roof.

There are several silver and gold lamps that hang from the ceiling which are said to have been gifts from the Ottoman Empire. Moreover, there is a golden door (Bab Al Tawbah), and eight sacred stones that features Arabic calligraphy. The inner walls of Al Ka’aba, covered in marble, are also anointed with the fragrant oil that is applied to the exterior.

Did you know that? Once you step in, you can pray Salah in any direction you like.

Al Ka’aba Gates

There are two official gates to enter Al Ka’aba. On the north side is the Gate of King Fahd (Bab Al Malik Fahd), which provides access to the eastern outer prayer area of the mosque. It was installed during the second Saudi expansion project carried out between 1982-1988 CE., while on the west side is the Gate of the Prophet (Bab Al Nabi), which is located close to the Al Safa area. The third gate is known as the Gate of the Umrah (Bab Al Umrah). It holds significance as Prophet Muhammad entered Makkah for Umrah through it. This gate, located in the northwest, provides direct access to Al Mataf area. Around Al Ka’aba is the circumambulation area (Sahn Al Mataf) for Tawaf.

Al Ka’aba is at the heart of Makkah. Its origins stretch back thousands of years to the time of Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail . It serves as Al Qibla, or focal point, that we face during prayer and represents the oneness of Allah. The annual Hajj brings millions of faithful from around the world to experience Al Ka’aba’s sanctity. Its history, structure, and rituals continue to captivate Muslims globally.
