Reflections on Tawakkul Meaning and Types!

Tawakkul is how we should attain Allah’s acceptance. Don’t we all agree that Allah is capable, sufficient, and knowing? Who else would you turn to, rely on, pray to and seek help from?

It is one of the greatest acts of worship that many people neglect under the pressures of life. In order to understand the importance of Tawakkul, we need to know first the difference between Tawakkul and trust.

The Meaning of Tawakkul

It is a core principle of Islam. It is having complete trust and reliance on Allah for all affairs of life and total acceptance of his will and full belief in His power.

It is directly linked to the essence of Islam. Islam literally means submission, which is Submission to Allah’s Will. It is trusting Allah’s plan without questioning, without doubts, and with contentment. Believe that Allah’s plan is the perfect plan for you and that there is no other plan that would have worked better.

The difference between Tawakkul and Dependency

Trust is directly linked to faith. How come can anyone imagine that he has power and control over what happens in his life without the command of Allah. Allah ordered us to rely on him, to believe in His judgment, and to trust His giving.

However, it doesn’t contradict studying, analyzing, and planning, for Allah, has commanded us to strive in order to achieve what we want with always trusting Him and his will. Leaving the outcome of the matter to His judgment and trusting that He will always choose the best for us. Don’t be one of those who have mistaken Tawakkul with Dependency.

It’s the idea of doing your best, taking all the necessary precautions, dotting your i’s crossing your t’s, and only then accepting the outcome.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا خُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ فَانْفِرُوا ثُبَاتٍ أَوِ انْفِرُوا جَمِيعًا

Tie your Camel and Rely on Allah

What Tawakkul really is can be explained in the hadith where The Prophet advises tying a camel to a pole,

Anas bin Malik narrated that a man said: “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely (upon Allah), or leave it loose and rely (upon Allah)?” He said: “Tie it and rely (upon Allah).”

Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “If you were to rely on Allah with the required reliance, then He would provide for you just as a bird is provided for, it goes out in the morning empty, and returns full.”

Types of Tawakkul

Stop complaining: Bear your problems patiently, as endurance is a quality of believers. 

إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعاً (19) إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعاً (20) وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعاً (21)

Feel content: This is when we satisfy our self with the little sustenance that Allah provided for us. It was described as “little” only to comply with the wanting nature of man.

Love Allah’s choice: Whenever Allah afflicts us with what seems evil and bad we tend to have a bad suspicion, However, loving and accepting help us to relax and attain the true meaning of Tawakkul.

وَمَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَالِغُ أَمْرِهِ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا

A Muslim should have a feeling of deep dependence and Tawakkul on Allah because nothing in this world happens without His will or His knowledge. This is a core principle of Islam and if you see things that way then you’ll realize that only through constant communication with Allah through prayers and supplications, you would be able to achieve success in this world or in the hereafter.

“That is when you are buying and selling, giving and taking, remember Allah much, and do not let this world distract you from that which will benefit you in the Hereafter.”
