The Story of Hajar and her son Ismail

The Well of Zamzam traces its origins back to the arid desert and a mother’s desperate search for water. After Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) left his wife Hajar and their son Ismail in the desert as per Allah’s command, the supply of water he had left behind for them was soon depleted.

Left in a barren valley with no water source and her child crying from thirst, Hajar ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa hoping for a sign of water or travelers who could help.

It was at this desperate moment that Angel Jibreel made his divine intervention. Striking the arid ground with his foot, water erupted and began to flow in all directions, a sight that left Hajar astonished.

Quick to respond, Hajar started gathering sand, using stones and pebbles to curb the excess flow and contain the gushing water. As she did this, she uttered “Zam, Zam,”, a phrase which later gave the well its name. Contrary to its literal translation, Zamzam has come to represent water that is both tasty and slightly salty, a refreshment that is cherished by millions of believers to this day.

Zamzam Water

The Virtues of Zamzam Water

Our beloved Prophet Muhammed PBUH said,

“The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam; it is a kind of food and a healing from sickness.”
– Sahih al-Jami’, 3302.

According to the hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet PBUH said concerning the water of Zamzam,

“It is a blessing, and it is food that satisfies.”
– Muslim, 4/1922.

The Prophet PBUH also said,

“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.”
– Ibn Majah, 3062

More than water, it is regarded as nourishment, embodying the essence of food. Beyond that, its curative properties have been emphasized, offering healing from ailments. This isn’t just water; it’s a blessing, a testament to the divine miracles of Allah, the Almighty.

8 Key Etiquettes of Drinking Zamzam Water

Zamzam water is revered not only for its miraculous origins but also for its spiritual significance in Islam. When drinking this blessed water, several etiquettes, derived from the Sunnah (practices and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), can elevate the experience:

  1. Intention (Niyyah): Before consuming Zamzam water, one should set a sincere intention or make a prayer (dua). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.” This underscores the importance of making a specific supplication or intention before drinking.
  2. Facing the Qibla: It’s recommended to stand and face the Qibla (the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah) when drinking Zamzam water.
  3. Saying Bismillah: Start with mentioning Allah’s name by saying “Bismillah.”
  4. Drinking in three breaths: Following the Sunnah, it’s recommended to drink water in three sips, pausing for a breath between each. This etiquette is not exclusive to Zamzam water but is a general guideline for all drinks.
  5. Sitting while drinking: The jurists recommend sitting while drinking Zamzam water, akin to the etiquette with other drinks. However, a hadith from Ibn `Abbas mentions he gave the Prophet Zamzam water to drink while he was standing, suggesting that drinking while standing is permissible but might be less preferred.
  6. Drinking one’s fill: Quench your thirst and drink your fill of Zamzam water.
  7. Sprinkling Zamzam water: Scholars recommend sprinkling Zamzam water on one’s head, face, and body. This act is a symbolic gesture, amplifying the blessings and effects of the water.
  8. Making specific duas: Given the special nature of Zamzam water, one should make lots of dua when drinking it, especially seeking benefits in this world or the Hereafter.
